After Gastric Bypass Surgery - Recovery From Bariatric Surgery

The medical advancements in the modern society have made it possible to treat extreme obesity with surgical procedures. Bariatric surgery is the collective term of the many options available in treating extreme obesity or severe overweight. There are more and more people undergoing this kind of procedures to help them reduce weight and build up their self esteem. Bariatric surgery also saves them from developing other life threatening diseases like hypertension, stroke, and heart ailments.

What can you expect after gastric bypass surgeryall The first restriction you will encounter would be the drastic diet change. You won't be allowed to eat for one to three days after the procedure so that your stomach can heal. You will be asked to strictly follow a specific progression of your diet for about twelve weeks. It will begin at first with liquid diets only, then proceeds to pureed and soft foods, and finally to regular foods. However, you should remember that you won't be able to or rather, you will never return to your old eating habits.

This is due to the fact that your stomach pouch will reduce to the size of a walnut thus making you eat very small meals during the day. During the first six months after the procedure, eating too much or too fast may cause vomiting or intense pain under your breastbone. As time passes by, the amount you eat can be gradually increased but as mentioned, you will never return to your old eating habits.

This kind of diet restriction will cause your body to lose weight fast and will continue to lose weight during the next twelve months after the surgery. Your body's reaction to the rapid weight loss in the first three to six months include body aches, feeling of tiredness, feeling cold, drying of skin, thinning of hair or hair loss, and even changing of moods.

The dramatic weight loss may improve or resolve some ailments like diabetes, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, obstructive sleep apnea, cardiovascular problems, and gastroesophageal reflux disease. About 50 to 60 percent of your excess weight is eliminated from your body within the first two years of the surgery. People who have undergone the procedure will have improved mobility and quality of life. They will be able to do things they were not able to do when they were severely overweight and their self confidence is greatly improved.
